A deep analysis spanning 4–6 weeks produces higher fidelity results but consumes internal resource time that competitors may allocate to remediation instead.

Internal versus third-party assessors: Internal teams have institutional knowledge but may unconsciously rationalize partial implementations as compliant. Third-party assessors applying the same scrutiny as an accredited certification body surface gaps more reliably but cost more. The third-party certification bodies that conduct formal audits are accredited under ISO/IEC 17021-1 and are obligated to apply objective evaluation criteria that internal teams cannot replicate.

Remediation priority conflicts: High-risk gaps are not always the same as high-effort gaps. Misconception: A gap analysis guarantees certification readiness.

Misconception: Gaps only exist where documentation is missing.
Correction: A documented control that is not operationally active is still a gap. ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Clause 8.1 requires that planned controls be "implemented and operating effectively" — documentation alone does not satisfy this clause.

Misconception: The same gap analysis applies to all frameworks.
Correction: Control families, evidence requirements, and classification terminology differ materially across ISO 27001, NIST SP 800-53, PCI DSS v4.0, and HIPAA Security Rule (45 CFR Part 164, Subpart C). A gap analysis conducted against one framework cannot be directly transposed to another without re-mapping.
